Can I pay out of pocket?
Privacy: Paying out of pocket for counseling keeps your information private and confidential. Conversely, utilizing insurance means your insurance company is allowed to have access to details of your therapy sessions, including your therapists’ notes. Knowing this tends to make most people feel a little uncomfortable.
Avoiding diagnoses: Insurance companies require a diagnosis code to reimburse treatment. Many people wish to avoid having a mental health condition formally diagnosed in their medical records, as this can impact everything from job opportunities to one’s ability to get life insurance. Paying privately sidesteps this diagnostic process and documentation.
Availability: We don’t know if you’ve tried, but we have. We’ve called our own insurance companies to try to set up an appointment with a counselor and have found that the wait to see someone is extensive, and the representative you speak with can tell you very little about the person you will be meeting with. Paying privately for counseling allows you to find someone you trust on your timeline.
You’re in the driver’s seat: Working with insurance can frequently mean that you are limited to a certain number of sessions to make progress towards your therapeutic goals, and there is less face-to-face time with your counselor. Some insurance companies even deny the use of some of the most effective therapeutic treatment modalities, which means it could take you longer to reach your goals. Sounds frustrating, right?
But what if I actually do want to use insurance that is not in network with Release Counseling Center, PLLC?
If requested, we can provide a Superbill for your counseling appointment at the time of service that may be used to submit to your insurance company for reimbursements. Many of our clients have high deductibles which they pay out of pocket anyway and want to choose a counselor for themselves vs having the insurance company choose for them.
What is a Superbill? A Superbill is essentially a receipt with specific insurance coding that you would submit directly to your insurance company. Depending on your personal plan and which insurance company you’re with, you may have dollar amounts applied to an out-of-network deductible or you may get reimbursed for a portion of your counseling costs. Every plan is different, so we recommend checking with your insurance carrier to evaluate the benefits of a Superbill before booking your first session. With Release Counseling Center, PLLC being out of network, we do not verify insurance benefits.
Lastly, many clients are also able to utilize their FSA or HSA accounts for counseling with us. Although there is typically no issue with this, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and verify with your FSA or HSA plan benefits before booking an appointment.
It’s important to note that marriage counseling and family counseling is not FSA or HSA eligible, unless counseling is needed due to another medical condition.
